Hooking Up in NYC: Greener Gadgets Print E-mail
Dr. Samuel Says - Bidness
Written by Dr. Samuel Centralia, Ph.D., D.D.S., Esq.

If you're planning to be in NYC this weekend, and looking for a date, I'll be attending the first annual Greener Gadgets conference on Saturday at the McGraw-Hill Conference Center in Manhattan. In keeping with the spirit of the event, I'll be camping on the shores of the Turtle Pond in nearby Central Park. No-impact camping, of course. Stop by if you can. Just ask around in the park -- the locals know me.

The Greener Gadgets conference, organized by the stalwart and resolute fellows over at Inhabitat.com, is dedicated to the collective greening of the $160 billion consumer electronics industry. Representatives from hundreds of manufacturers, designers, retailers, press outfits, and think tank sorts will be in attendance. Topics to be addressed include:

  • design for sustainability
  • product life cycle management
  • take-back and recycling programs
  • energy efficiency
  • greener materials
  • green product marketing.

greener_gadgets.jpgReally, you could have a conference on each of these topics individually. There will be some fun exhibits, too, including a "model green office space," several displays from the burgeoning field of renewable energy start-ups, and even a space for the long-rumored technological triumph that is the solar-powered flashlight. You can also recycle your cell phones on site, if you're interested. I have the urge to "recycle" my cell phone about 100 times a day, so this should come in handy.

It really is heartening to see the green movement expanding so powerfully of late, particularly here in the U.S. Of course, we may already be out of time. Did you know that scientists are considering declaring a new geological epoch due to modern humanities profound impact on the geological record? Goodbye Holocene Era; hello Anthropocene Era. I'm not kidding.
