I haven't jumped on the iPhone wagon yet, but many friends and
colleagues have, and so I am relentlessly subjected to this unique
brand of tech fetishism. These guys can have entire conversations about
what kind of wallpaper they're considering. Even the lab monkeys here
at Dyscern World HQ Labs have gotten into it. One of the rhesus
females, we call her Wilma, just downloaded a set of Hannah Montana
themes. This place is weird sometimes.
If you, too, are looking to pimp your iPhone, check out the blog at iphoneskinning.com. Here you will find fellow devotees tracking all possible iPhone wallpapers, applications, icons and themes. One of the funnier ones I've seen: the iDial virtual rotary phone app. I rather like the retro analog trend. Interesting to see how designers try to digitally emulate old technology.
Anyway, so long as you're surfing around, why not check out the random, curious and very excellent Illustrated Catalog of ACME Products. This website was forwarded to me by vigilant reader G. Harrison. The comprehensive site gathers pictures and information on "all ACME products, specialty divisions, and services featured in Warner Bros. cartoons (made by the original studio from 1935 to 1964)."
Here you'll find the ACME Rocket Sled, favored by a certain wily coyote, the Acme Time Space Gun, and the ACME Straitjacket Ejecting Bazooka. There are hundreds of products and specialty divisions (the ACME Theatrical Agency, the ACME Blasting Powder Co.), each with accompanying illustrations, screen captures, and original cartoon title, year and director.
This kind of thing is the WWW at its best. A labor of love, exhaustively researched and carefully compiled. I can only imagine the time logged to watch all those old cartoons, and get screenshots for each and every ACME product placement for nearly 30 years. Crazy. If you'd like another, hard-copy take on the concept, consider the official ACME Catalog from Warner Bros. -- "Quality is Our #1 Dream!"
