Wii Will Rock You: Wireless Nunchuks Print E-mail
Dr. Samuel Says - New Toys

I finally talked the Powers That Be here at Dyscern World HQ into springing for a Wii console. I'd been doing some hand-eye coordination experiments with the rhesus monkeys, and wanted to see if they could actually play a round of virtual golf. Turns out that, not only can they, they're averaging 6-under-par for 9 holes. Those are PGA Tour numbers, and if I play my cards right, we're all going to retire fat and happy.

nunchuk.jpgThe Wii is insanely fun, I'll admit it. It's really a marvel of minimalist design. The Wii controller, which is wireless and uses digital and mechanical technology to detect movement in three directions, is especially cool. The controller comes with plastic protective casing and a wristcord, as gamers are prone to flail about wildly with the thing. Last week, during a game of virtual tennis with Wilma, I lost my grip and shattered three vials of percolating ammonium nitrate solution. That didn't end well.

Anyhoo, for fellow Wii addicts, thought I might point out that there are a couple third-party solutions out there right now for the Wii nunchuck. (The nunchuck is a secondary controller that connects to the main controller with a cord.) Brando offers the elegantly named Wii Wireless Adapter for Wii Nunchuk Controller ($20). Nyko has similar widget, the Kama Wireless Nunchuk . Both are plug-and-play, battery-powered, and make for interesting design specimens when attached to the controller. The Brando thing is particularly interesting -- all of sudden, you're playing videogames with a postmodern clothes iron.

Click around, and you'll soon find dozens of third-party add-ons for the Wii -- guitars, laser guns, customized protective sheaths. This is going to get expensive, I can tell.
