In the 1990's it was hard to find a big name rock act that wasn't from Seattle, now it's just hard to find any of those bands. The exception to that is Pearl Jam, who are still rocking venues worldwide. Part of their longevity comes from the fact that unlike their peers, nobody in the band died...and their ability to adapt to the rapidly changing music industry.
A classic example of the band's ability to find new ways to cash in on their music was the Pearl Jam Bootleg Program. Since 2000, Eddie Vedder and crew have been selling recordings of their live shows to fans. Nearly 3.5 million bootlegs have been purchased.
Today they are teaming up with Verizon Wireless to extend the bootleg program to your mobile phone. I'll let the press release do the explaining:
"Every night of the tour, Pearl Jam's live concert performance will be recorded. After each performance, Pearl Jam's studio engineer will mix three songs on the Verizon Mobile Recording Studio Bus that will be released on V CAST Music. Verizon Wireless will offer one of the full-length tracks for free on V CAST Music; the other two full-length songs will be available, as well as the ringtones and ringback tones for all three songs, at standard costs. Each free mobile bootleg will be available until the following show; however, customers will be able to access and purchase all of the mobile bootlegs as they become available through the end of the tour."
What could possibly sound better than crowd noise on the tiny speaker of your mobile phone? I can start listing things right now, but I got stuff to do. For the Pearl Jam fans, you know the ones who haven't turned a radio on since 1996, I'm sure this is pretty cool. For me, whatever.
