I can safely say that this short film clip is not something I ever expected to see on the corporate website for Philips Electronics. Um, I'm going to have to use some words here that may strike you as incongruous in a consumer technology blog. Let us steel ourselves. The film is rather sensual, rather erotic, rather beautiful. Click over and I think you'll agree.
The clip is in support of one of Philips' far-future R&D design
initiatives, called SKIN:Tattoo. The basic idea -- electronic tattoos
that only become visible when stimulated by touch. It's unclear whether
these would be transparent films on the surface of the skin, or some
kind of subdermal material. Either way: Wow.
Navigate around this section of the Philips website, and you'll find
some other interesting projects in the works. Mood-sensitive jewelry,
an emotion sensor, and some crazy thing having to do with body odor,
dogs, and preventive diagnostics.
I applaud Philips' initiative in all of these areas, of course. I also
rather like the thought that, somewhere, an endeavoring filmmaker and
two models got paid (handsomely, I'm guessing) for producing artsy
erotica commissioned by a multinational technology conglomerate. There
is hope yet, my friends…
