Things were different 20 years ago. You didn't to apply for financial aid to fill your car up with gas, it was socially acceptable for a man to sport a mustache, if you weren't home near your telephone people had to leave you a message on your answering machine to stay in touch and the New Kids on the Block were on top of the world.
If I had to choose which of these aspects of the 80s, I'd like to see make a comeback I'd put them in this order:
1) Low gas prices. 2) Mustaches. 3) Answering machines. 4) New Kids.
Sadly we still live in a world where gas prices are approaching five dollars a gallon, mustaches are only acceptable if they are connected to a goatee and my cell phone never stops ringing. The New Kids however decided that sitting on their butts and doing nothing but collecting royalty checks and laughing about the good old days was boring.
The oldest "Kids" I've ever encountered have released a single called "Summertime" along with a video for the song. In the video, NKOTB bring with them an element from their past, a choreographed dance sequenced (40 year old guys in matching white outfits dancing together) and element from the present - text messaging.
Apparently all it took to put together this highly anticipated reunion (highly anticipated in the sense that girls in their mid to late 20s have been saying, "Wouldn't it be awesome if they all got together again") was a text message from Donnie on his blackberry to the rest of the gang with the words, "It's on". Once they get the text they stop everything they are doing, even Danny who somehow gets reception in the rainforrest, to once again give the world awful music. Who says you can't bring people together with text messaging?
