Here are some numbers for you: Since their debut in 2001, Apple has sold more than 185 million iPods. For many years, iPods accounted for around half of Apple's annual revenue. According to most estimates, the iPod has about 75 percent of the portable music device market.
These are astounding numbers in any industry, but to achieve such
dominance in the realm of consumer technology is truly awesome. With
the iPod, Apple whipped up the perfect storm of right technology, right
design, right timing, and superb marketing. And they don't even pay me
to say that.
Anyhoo, as they do right around this time every year, the Apple crew
today announced new versions of its core product line, including the
iPod Nano and the iPod Touch. The new $150 8GB Nano comes with a video
player, is thinner and does that neat trick where the display changes
orientation from horizontal to vertical depending on how it's held.
Also, if you shake the thing, it will reshuffle the playlist. For some
reason, that makes me happy.
Also unveiled today, the touchscreen-only Touch music player (like the
iPhone without the phone). The 8GB version now retails at $229, down
from $299. The 32GB unit is down a hundred bucks, from $499 to $399.
The announcement was made by Apple CEO Steve Jobs his own bad self, at
a press event in San Francisco. Steve looked good, I must say. I wasn't
able to attend in person, but instead used my new CerebroProjector
prototype. This is my latest project, and it allows me to project my
consciousness into another person for up to 45 minutes. Unfortunately,
the focusing lens was a bit off. Instead of getting a member of the
press pool, I ended up inhabiting a Starbucks barista up on the
concourse level and caught the announcement on the closed-circuit feed. Still tinkering with this thing. Ended up working a double shift, too.
