I'm prone to a certain paranoia anyway, but after enduring all these terrifying headlines on the economy -- and recently reading a collection of Thomas Friedman essays -- I'm becoming convinced that unchecked capitalism is going to kill us. Seriously, I'm becoming a real communist over here. I've even busted out my old Mao jacket. Still fits, too.
But occasionally news breaks through -- like sunshine through the
clouds -- of real, legitimate, powerful corporate do-goodism.
Tellingly, these items typically come forth from more progressive
business concerns, often in the technology sector. (And the coffee
sector, for some reason.)
To wit: Today, Google announced its 10 ^ 100 initiative (pronounced 10
to the 100th) which promises $10 million to solicit and bankroll …
ideas. That's right, you might remember ideas. They're what America
used to be built on before certain other corporate concerns got hold of
our government and started actively opposing them. Ideas like -- oh, I
don't know -- renewable energy, say.
But I digress. (Wilma, our superintelligent lab monkey here at Dyscern World HQ Labs, keeps reminding
me that this isn't a political blog. She's as far to the right as I am
to the left. We fight a lot.) Anyhoo, Google is looking for
world-changing ideas -- techie or otherwise -- and I like to think that
regardless of politics everyone can get behind an initiative like this.
I guarantee you that Google can and will move a lot faster than any
federal funding agency. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this
one plays out.
