As loyal readers will know, before I took over operations here at
Dyscern World HQ Labs, I piloted several top-secret research projects
for various government agencies and multinational corporations. Hence
the army of CIA and corporate espionage assassins on my tail, and my
subsequent use of aliased personas and secure underground bunkers.
What you may not know is that the bulk of my research prior to this job concerned the development of artificial intelligence (AI). My work on the Wintermute Project alone has resulted in high priority warrants for my arrest with both Interpol and the Turing cops.
I’ve kept up on research in the field, and was enthused by this recent report from the UK’s Aberystwyth University, as published in the journal Science. It seems the Aberystwyth robot, code-named Adam, has become the first machine in history to have discovered -- via manual laboratory work -- new scientific knowledge independently of its human creators. Admittedly, Adam’s work isn’t all that exciting -- it concerns gene coding for yeast enzymes. Still.
According to reports, the team has just completed a successor robot called Eve, which is about to work with Adam on a series of experiments designed to find new drugs to treat tropical diseases such as malaria and schistosomiasis.
“Adam is a prototype,” says lead researcher Ross King. “Eve is better designed and more elegant.” Great. Wait until Lucy, our ultra-feminist lab rat, gets wind of this quote. I’ll never hear the end of it. She’s already unionizing the female rhesus monkeys.
Anyway, with luck, such advanced AI will eventually trickle down to the consumer technology market. I’d love to get an iPhone app that can discern voice patterns and tell me, when my mother calls, whether she’s going to bug me again about settling down with a nice Catholic girl. There’s a practical app I can use.
