I keep thinking Twittermania is going to calm down and go away, but it seems that it’s only gaining momentum. I rather admire the discipline and efficiency required to communicate in 140-character bursts, but the misspellings and arcane acronyms make me crazy. I’m the sort of fellow who still composes emails as if they were official correspondence. Using, you know, grammar and stuff.
Came across this item the other day. House Republicans have convened a
New Media Caucus on the Hill, encouraging fellow lawmakers to adopt new
media tools like Twitter. More than 60 House Republicans have joined
the caucus, which will invite tech companies like Apple and the
BlackBerry folks to give presentations on better use of mobile devices,
etc. "It's like that old saying 'you can't teach an old dog new
tricks,'" Ohio Republican Rep. Bob Latta told CNN, "Well, yeah, you
can."
The Japanese have been twittering for millennia, of course. Only they
call it haiku, and it doesn’t require a handheld consumer electronic
device. As it happens, I’m a rather accomplished haiku poet myself,
having trained for several years in Tokyo on the side while running
covert ops out of the Canadian embassy. Long story. I’ve provided a
small sampling below, for your perusal and enjoyment.
