Good news this week from the world of law enforcement.
Evidently, a man in Berlin
was charged with disturbing the peace after hurling his computer out of his
apartment window in the middle of the night. Police found the street below
littered with the shattered remnants of personal computing technology, and
identified the culprit.
However, charges were dropped when the man made an honest
confession -- technical frustrations with the machine prompted him to heave it
out the window. "Who hasn't felt like doing that?" said a police
spokesman. So charges were dropped, and the man was asked to simply clean up
the mess. This is evidence, I think, of a civilization moving forward. In many
instances, tossing your computer out the window should not only be allowed, it
should be encouraged.
And now for an update from the Practical Gizmo beat. Check
out this here Sound-Activated Keyfinder. I like this idea a lot -- it's
essentially a Clapper for your keyring. Can't find your keys in the morning?
Just clap, or whistle, and the Keyfinder activates it's alarm function, beeping
and flashing until you make your joyful reunion. There are many variations on
the theme, and if you Google around, you'll find quite a few competing products
in this most specific of marketplaces. I'd like to see even more options,
frankly. A Remote Control Finder, for instance -- I'd pay serious money for
that. I also tend to lose things around the lab quite a bit, and I'd love to
see a Particle Detector Finder. Otherwise I'm running around the lab with a
tray full of Polonium-210 isotopes, which is probably a little bit dangerous
and tends to scare my faithful Doberman guard dog, Copernicus.
