Everyone has a weakness, and mine is spatial thinking. Also, bad Italian horror films. And a particular variety of narcotic neurostimulants you can only get out of Switzerland. But these are stories for another time -- let’s get back to spatial thinking.
I really do rather suck at it, a pattern that has shown up in standardized tests since I was six years old. As such, the ubiquitous Rubik’s Cube has forever been a thorn in my side.
Thank the gods, technology has come to the rescue. CubeCheater is a new iPhone app that will solve your Rubik’s Cube puzzle for you, in 20 moves or less. The genius of it is that all you have to do is take pictures of the Rubik’s cube six faces with the phone. The app then crunches the numbers and provides a step-by-step solution via the 3D interface.
Such solvers have been available online for a long while, of course. The beauty here is the portability of the iPhone and the camera trick. Next time that runty little cube shows up at a party, I’m taking it down. With technology!
