The New PSP: Thinner, Lighter Timewasting
Dr. Samuel Says - New Toys

Why, when I was a boy, we didn't have these ultraslick consumer gaming devices for entertainment. No sir, we had to make our own toys! Of course, even at that tender age, I was a little different from the other kids. While they fashioned yo-yos and paddleballs, I devised a series of handheld gamma-ray projectors. Many were the happy summer days I spent accelerating the evolutionary development of the frogs and lizards in the local pond. Ah, youth!

psp.jpgAt this year's newly scaled-down but always-festive E3 Media and Business Summit , in Santa Monica, many up-and-coming gamer treats were previewed. But I always like to keep my eye on Sony's deservedly ubiquitous PlayStation Portable , or PSP. Word this year is that there aren't too many changes coming in the new version, due out in September. Basically, it will be a bit thinner and lighter. The 4.3-inch hi-res LCD screen stays the same, as does most of the rest of the fundamental design. But it's going to be 33 percent lighter (a-pretty-amazing-when-you-think-about-it 189g) and 19 percent thinner (18.6mm thick). Also new in this iteration is a video-out port that lets you plug the PSP into a TV or computer monitor for big-screen play. There's also an option for using USB to power up the thing via your PC or PlayStation proper.

The forum boards are lighting up, predictably, with various kvetches, but I for one will always be happy to support and espouse the essential coolness of the PSP. There's really nothing better for waiting out long plane rides, or the current U.S. executive branch administration.
